At a time when our parents were having a difficult time in life, we moved from Singapore to Johor to be with them. Once we got here, however, we realised that most of the outdoor play facilities that had been built for children were not usable. The little playgrounds in every taman were rusty, broken, and downright unsafe for use by children. In many of them, the flooring had also been damaged through extensive weathering, and a sheer lack of maintenance too.
We used to drive to so many different places around JB in the hopes of finding a good playground for our son to play freely in, but they were few and far between. The scorching hot weather and unpredictable rain also made us wish that we had a sheltered playground to bring our son to. This made us think about building one on our own, and making it a place for families to spend quality time with one another, while also providing parents more opportunities to learn about their children.
In other words, we wanted to help parents feel the true joy of parenthood without being weighed down by society’s misconceptions of kids and how kids should be. Of the many playgrounds we visited and brought our son to play in, the words ‘naughty’, ‘what’s wrong with you’, ‘why can’t you listen when I say it once’, ‘careful careful CAREFUL’ etcetera were commonplace, and it made us wonder why so many parents felt this way about their children, instead of enjoying their time at the play space with them.
The Discovery Den was therefore born from the longing of providing a suitable play space for children and parents alike, so that they can grow closer to each other as they both grow older.
