About us

Mission
Our mission is to design and build captivating playgrounds that transcend ordinary play, sparking imagination and fostering physical, cognitive, and emotional development in children. We are committed to creating environments that encourage families to bond, which will enable them to embrace moments of joy and the wonder of childhood.
By integrating Montessori principles and cutting-edge neuroscience with play, we aim to offer parents valuable educational content that empowers them to understand and support their child's growth, enabling us to make a positive impact on generations to come.

Why The Discovery Den was born

The Discovery Den is a beautiful play space that has been designed with child development in mind. It is based on the concepts of intentional play and play that flows, so you’ll find that the equipment and toys will help your little one work on every skill they possibly can from head to toe.
For parents
As parents, we keep speaking about how we can prepare our children to face this world, especially as it becomes more VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous). Let us show you the best way you can prepare your child — through play, and through understanding your child’s development. As you grow with your child, you’ll even find that you understand yourself better!
Why do our children need to move their bodies so that they grow well?
Did you know that we have many more senses than the 5 basic ones most of us are born with? We would struggle to live without these other senses if we didn’t have them. For example, proprioception, the sense of space, can only be developed through movement and physical play. It’s therefore very natural, that our children need a free, safe space where they can move freely (even hang upside down!) so that they have plenty of opportunities to develop their sense of space. This will help them develop coordination between their limbs and their body so that they don’t get injured because their bodies feel clumsy! Read: Our bodies and their amazing senses!
The need for risk assessment
Safety doesn’t come by padding play spaces with foam from floor to ceiling. Safety comes when our children can instinctively navigate spaces in a safe manner. This instinct also develops through free play. A large part of developing this instinct comes from constantly doing risk assessment. Our children are actually wired to be curious and risk assess from the very beginning. When we set up the environment such that children are encouraged to take risks, they’re able to reap MANY benefits. These include cognitive development, an increased sense of awareness of self and others, increased confidence and resilience, the ability to discern, judge, and take responsibility for themselves. This means that we provide age-appropriate challenges and opportunities during play, and give them the space to build their own character and skills, at their own time and pace.
What families can take away from The Discovery Den
You’ll also find lots of Montessori and Neuroscience based resources as you spend time at The Discovery Den, and our sincere wish is that you find that your relationship with your child grows more loving and positive, the more you understand your child and the stages of development they’ll be going through for the next two decades! That unconditional nurturance we speak of in our mission will then become an automatic offering from you to your child.

Founders’ story

At a time when our parents were having a difficult time in life, we moved from Singapore to Johor to be with them. Once we got here, however, we realised that most of the outdoor play facilities that had been built for children were not usable. The little playgrounds in every taman were rusty, broken, and downright unsafe for use by children. In many of them, the flooring had also been damaged through extensive weathering, and a sheer lack of maintenance too.
We used to drive to so many different places around JB in the hopes of finding a good playground for our son to play freely in, but they were few and far between. The scorching hot weather and unpredictable rain also made us wish that we had a sheltered playground to bring our son to. This made us think about building one on our own, and making it a place for families to spend quality time with one another, while also providing parents more opportunities to learn about their children.
In other words, we wanted to help parents feel the true joy of parenthood without being weighed down by society’s misconceptions of kids and how kids should be. Of the many playgrounds we visited and brought our son to play in, the words ‘naughty’, ‘what’s wrong with you’, ‘why can’t you listen when I say it once’, ‘careful careful CAREFUL’ etcetera were commonplace, and it made us wonder why so many parents felt this way about their children, instead of enjoying their time at the play space with them.
The Discovery Den was therefore born from the longing of providing a suitable play space for children and parents alike, so that they can grow closer to each other as they both grow older.
